On the Calculation of Stresses from Finite Element Models.
In this white paper, the expressions for the strain and stress equations for a structural linear finite element analysis procedure are outlined; with the element stress definition having a nature that is not necessarily in equilibrium across element boundaries, i.e, there are finite stress discontinuities, then certain controls and verification are needed to ensure the accuracy and quality of the finite element stress solution.
It is highlighted that the calculation of an error measure and its display is a most relevant aspect for a finite element stress analysis solution. The quality of the finite element stress solution should be known. Once the error is small, values of stresses that have been smoothed (grid point stresses), can be used with confidence.
